The Hidden Reason Your Symptoms Keep Flaring Up

You’re doing everything right.

You’re eating more plants. You’re moving your body. You’re trying to get to bed earlier. And yet some days you wake up feeling like you’ve gone ten rounds, puffy, achy, foggy, irritable, and you genuinely cannot figure out why.

Here’s something that might explain it.

Inflammation and hormonal disruption run on the same track. When your body is dealing with chronic low-grade inflammation, the kind you can’t see or feel directly, every symptom you’re already managing gets louder. Hot flashes more intense. Joint aches that won’t quit. Brain fog that makes you feel like you’re wading through mud. Mood swings that seem to come from nowhere.

And the frustrating thing is that inflammation is often being quietly fuelled by everyday foods that seem completely harmless.

This isn’t about being perfect

Before we go any further, this is not about restriction. It’s not about following another set of rules or feeling guilty every time you eat something off a list.

It’s about becoming aware of what might be turning up the volume on symptoms you’re already exhausted by. Because once you can see the connection, you get to choose. And that choice feels very different from being told what you can and can’t eat.

What inflammation actually looks like on your plate

Most of the foods that drive inflammation aren’t obvious. They’re not the foods you’d immediately label as “bad.” They hide in things that are marketed as healthy, including vegan and plant-based products.

Here’s what to look out for:

Ultra-processed plant foods. Vegan sausages, packaged snacks, meat alternatives made with long ingredient lists, emulsifiers, flavour enhancers, and refined protein isolates. These aren’t whole foods, they’re engineered products, and your gut knows the difference.

Refined sugar. It shows up everywhere, in sauces, flavoured plant yoghurts, granolas, cereals, and drinks that look innocent. Sugar is one of the most direct drivers of inflammation in the body.

Alcohol. Even one glass regularly is pro-inflammatory, disrupts your sleep architecture, and interferes with how your liver processes hormones. This one is worth being honest with yourself about.

Refined white flour. White bread, pasta, pastries, crackers, these spike blood sugar fast and feed inflammatory pathways in the gut.

What actually calms inflammation down

The good news, and there really is good news here, is that a whole food plant-based diet is one of the most anti-inflammatory ways of eating on the planet. The research consistently shows it reduces inflammatory markers in the blood, supports the gut bacteria that actively calm the immune system, and lowers oxidative stress throughout the body.

You’re already most of the way there. This week is just about closing the gaps.

The foods with the strongest anti-inflammatory evidence? Berries of any kind. Walnuts. Turmeric with black pepper. Ginger. Green tea. Dark leafy greens every single day. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, which contain a compound called sulforaphane that actively supports your liver in clearing excess estrogen.

And legumes, beans and lentils, every day without exception. The research on daily legume consumption and longevity is about as unambiguous as nutrition science gets.

One thing to do this week

Go through your kitchen this week, not to throw everything out, but just to look. Check the ingredient lists on the things you eat regularly. If a product has more than five or six ingredients and several of them are things you wouldn’t cook with at home, it’s worth finding a simpler swap.

Just awareness. That’s all this week asks for.

Because when you start seeing the connection between what’s on your plate and how you feel in your body, that’s when everything starts to shift.
